Artisan/craftsman made for export in early 1950s, purchased in Hong Kong ca. 1955.
Material is pre-ban ivory, unsigned, unbranded, per common practice at that time and place. White side natural ivory color, black side is brown-dyed ivory.
Kings are 20 cm tall, rest is to scale. (see photos)
Condition of pieces is very good, except for King's halberd blades and one rook flag which are bagged within the box, awaiting restoration. There is only the most minor breakage, the dark King has a small piece of crown missing which reveals the white ivory under the dyed outer surface. All threaded attachments are intact, pieces all stand on their own, or can be disassembled for inspection as desired.
Condition of box is strong, except that elastic retaining ribbons are still original, which means they have lost all elasticity, and are hanging loosely, not retaining the pieces well. Because of that, there is extra blanketing included as padding, one blanket for each side of the set. Some of the playing board squares have warped slightly, with sides and/or corners lifting, but all original pieces are intact. Corners of box are undamaged, no major scratches or scrapes are there. Hardware is all original, with two hinges and latch all installed as they were originally.
